This Is Kinda Cool
OK, today back in 1836, Sam Houston took office as the First President of the newly formed Republic of Texas (it was actually formed earlier that year).
This new country lasted from March 2, 1936 – February 19, 1846 before Texas joined the United States as the 28th state.
That happened officially on December 29, 1945 when President Polk signed the bill admitting them to the Union with the transfer of power from the Republic to the U.S. taking place on February 19, 1946.
The Republic of Texas had 4 Presidents during its existence: Sam Houston (he served twice); David G. Burnet; Mirabeau B. Lamar; and Anson Jones.
